LinkedIn personal

Reelwire posts each video to your own LinkedIn profile, as you, through a LinkedIn developer app of your own. The two LinkedIn products it uses, Share on LinkedIn and Sign In with LinkedIn using OpenID Connect, are granted to any app at once, without a review.

What you need​

  • A LinkedIn developer app with the two products above.
  • An access token for your profile with the openid, profile and w_member_social permissions. The token generator gives one for 60 days.

Set it up​

  1. Make the app. Open linkedin.com/developers/apps and press Create app. LinkedIn asks for a name, a LinkedIn page to link it to (any page you administer: nothing is posted there) and a logo.
  2. Add the products. On the app's Products tab, request Share on LinkedIn and Sign In with LinkedIn using OpenID Connect. Both are granted at once.
  3. Make a token. Open LinkedIn's token generator, choose the app, tick openid, profile and w_member_social, press Request access token, sign in as yourself and allow it. Copy the access token. Keep it to yourself: whoever holds it can post as you.
  4. Enter it in Reelwire. In Channels, open the channel's Settings, choose LinkedIn personal as the Platform and the Aspect ratio, and paste the Access token under Platform connector. Switch Platform connector on under When a post is due.
  5. Save. Reelwire asks LinkedIn whose token it is, and refuses a token LinkedIn does not accept. Once saved, the section names you.
  6. Put a reminder in your calendar for 60 days on. Before the token expires, make a new one as in step 3 and paste it into the channel's Access token: the other settings stay as they are. After it expires, posts fail with "LinkedIn refused the access token" until you do.

What a post looks like​

The video in your feed, with the text as the post: the post's own words, the brand's line, the link and the hashtags, up to 3,000 characters, and the post's title as the video's title. Visibility under the channel's Posting decides who sees it: Public, or Connections only.

LinkedIn processes a video after it arrives; it may show as processing for a minute in the feed.

Changes and take-downs​

Send delete request deletes the post. LinkedIn gives this product no way to change a post's text, so Send update request says so: edit it by hand on LinkedIn, or delete it and post it again.

To stop it, switch the connector off on the channel. To end it for good, remove the app's access in your LinkedIn settings, under Data privacy, Permitted services.
